All of us have several different identities. This isn’t schizophrenia (which is different from Multiple Personality Disorder anyway), but just a recognition that different contexts require different modes of behavior. This also translates to the way we dress and style ourselves, which can change significantly depending on whether we’re at work, visiting the parents, or binge-watching Netflix with a cat on our laps.
There are also, of course, occasions where you can let your hair down (or wear it up; your choice) and go a little wild with your styling, clothes, and makeup. When the only objective is to have fun, you can go try a much bolder appearance than usual. Experiment with a new look, flout convention a little and, above all, just be yourself.
Sadly, with the male approach to flirting being what it is, it’s often necessary to strike a balance between attracting attention, but not the wrong kind of attention. The best guide here is to think of the kind of clothes other women at your destination will be wearing and adjust that to suit your own style.
Of course, you can be less inhibited if going to a private house party with people you know. In any case, choose clothing that’s appropriate to the weather – nobody can enjoy themselves much while freezing to death.
At night, even indoors, you can generally expect the illumination to be on the dim side. Letting your features stand out will therefore require a heavier hand than with daytime, safe-for-work makeup.
In general, you would use concealer or foundation to highlight the brighter areas of your face: nose, cheekbones, and the forehead above the eyebrows. This can be contrasted with heavier than usual mascara, eyeshadow, and lipstick. If you want to stand out even more, you can use a pencil to accentuate your Cupid’s bow, extend your eyeliner just a little beyond the outer edge of your eye or even use a little glitter.
If you’ve gone to any trouble at all with the other aspects of your overall look, it would be a waste to simply pull your hair back into a ponytail or bun. On the other hand, you probably don’t want to end up looking like an extra from Lord of the Rings.
As with anything to do with styling, it’s usually a bad idea to simply copy something you saw in a magazine and expect it to work for you, too. Instead, use an app or your imagination to visualize how any given hairstyle suits your face, and never sacrifice your personal flair in order to try looking like someone you’re not.
While you will probably not want to drag something the size of a duffel around with you all night, having a few essentials near to hand is always useful. Aspirin, chewing gum, tissues, and whatever you’ll need to quickly freshen up your makeup are all good ideas.
Other items that may come in handy are a USB stick with an appropriate playlist pre-loaded, a pen in case you or a girlfriend wants to take down someone’s contact details, and a condom – depending on what your plans for later on might be.
